Arcane Magic

Recently on the ICE forums, I have been working on a proposed ruling for the handling of Arcane and Hybrid spell lists, including how to dispel or cancel them. I think that I have most of it worked out and that is going well.

However, those are not the only thoughts about magic that I have been having recently…

The Proposed Ruling

Rolemaster Classic does not have a specific realm of magic known as the Arcane, and personally, I would prefer to keep it that way. I think that rules I came up with for dealing with spells belong to multiple realms (i.e. Hybrid or Arcane) are both simple and effective.

If you want to read the proposed ruling, you can find it here:

However, this also brought to mind something else that I am hoping to eventually introduce into Rolemaster Classic.

New Types of Spell Lists

I was considering putting the following into Express Additions #7, but Heike vetoed it, wanting me to develop it more fully before publishing it.

Realm Spell Lists

The way RMC currently works is that each Pure spell useing profession gives the character 6 of his 10 Base Spell Lists, and he is supposed to select his other 4 Base Spell Lists. RMC recommends that those other 4 lists be selected from the realm’s Open and CLosed Spell Lists. This recommendation implies that,if the GM allows, the character may select his other 4 Base Spell Lists from the other professions from his realm.

One problem with the idea of selecting Open or Closed Spell Lists as Base Spel Lists is that the Open and Closed Spell Lists tend to be of lower power level than those of Base Spell Lists.

I had another idea. What if we created a pool of spell lists that was specific for the realm, and from which any Pure spell user could select his Additional Base Spell Lists. These Realm Lists would have the same basic power level as other Base Lists.

For example, a good Essence Realm List might be a list called Magestaff. Such a list would allow a mage to craft a staff which aids him in his casting of spells, and allows him to perform other tasks as well. I already have the basics of this list fleshed out, but I tend to get stuck on coming up for ideas regarding Realm Lists for the other realms and more for this realm.

Universal Spell Lists

A corollary to the Realm Spell List would be a Universal Spell Lists. This is essentially just like the Realm Spell List, except that it is available to all three Realms equally.

This makes it sound much like the current definition of Arcane Spell Lists as defined by the Proposed Ruling that I am working on. Therefore there would need to be a distinction made, and that distinction would have to be made on the Arcane side of things.
